The ESP32-S3 Smart Home Control Panel is a feature-rich interface designed specifically for the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-4B hardware. This project transforms the 4-inch IPS display into a centralized hub for home automation, integrating WiFi, MQTT for Home Assistant connectivity, and real-time environment tracking into a polished UI designed with SquareLine Studio and powered by the LVGL graphics library.
Smart Home Control and MQTT Integration
At its core, the panel provides a dedicated grid control system for Home Assistant. It features nine specialized switch buttons for common household devices, including lights, fans, AC units, and locks. The system maintains bi-directional synchronization, meaning the UI state updates automatically based on incoming MQTT messages from Home Assistant, while touch interactions publish commands immediately. Users can fully configure MQTT host details, credentials, and notification topics directly through the on-device settings menu.

Weather and Intelligent Location Strategy
The system employs a hybrid location strategy to ensure weather and time data remain accurate across reboots. It offers dual-mode location detection: an automatic mode that uses IP-based geolocation via ip-api.com and a manual override that allows users to search for any global city using the Open-Meteo Geocoding API. These settings are persistent, saved to the ESP32’s Non-Volatile Storage (NVS) so the device knows its location immediately upon waking.
The home screen adapts dynamically to the local environment. It fetches real-time conditions from Open-Meteo and adjusts the visual theme to match conditions like rain, snow, or fog. Furthermore, it features a day/night cycle that switches backgrounds based on local sunrise and sunset times.

Display, Power, and Notification Systems
Advanced power management is a priority for this portable-capable device. It integrates with the AXP2101 PMU to monitor battery health and charging status. The UI includes a dedicated settings screen for real-time backlight intensity adjustment (0% to 100%) and configurable timeouts for the screensaver and deep sleep modes. To maximize efficiency, the device can be woken from sleep via touch or motion, utilizing the QMI8658 IMU to detect when the device is moved.

The panel also functions as a notification center. It can receive text alerts from Home Assistant, maintaining a history of up to 15 recent notifications. A visual badge on the home screen keeps track of unread alerts, and users can manage individual or grouped notifications through a scrollable popup interface.
Hardware and Software Architecture
The project targets the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-4B, which features a 480x480 resolution RGB interface display. Key hardware components include:
- Processor: ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N16R8 (Xtensa® 32-bit LX7)
- Touch: GT911 Capacitive controller
- PMU: AXP2101 for power management and backlight control
- IMU: QMI8658C for motion wake-up
- RTC: PCF85063 for persistent timekeeping
From a software perspective, the project requires a custom partition scheme to accommodate large GUI assets. The default ESP32 partitions are replaced with a custom configuration that allocates 10MB for the application (app0) and nearly 6MB for SPIFFS. This ensures enough space for the high-resolution LVGL images and assets. Crucially, the display requires OPI PSRAM to be enabled in the build settings to initialize the 480x480 frame buffer successfully.
